Sparrow
I got this tattoo after much thought and research in memory of my best friend Heather who died when we were in high school. I wanted to remember the good times in her life so I got the tattoo on her birthday instead of the anniversary of her death.
I first thought of the idea of a bird because they sang the hymn, "I'll fly away" at her funeral. Then when researching, I found the Bible verse Matthew 10:29-31 which says, "are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid, you are worth more than many sparrows. This reminded me that everything happens for a reason and God doesn't let one sparrow, let alone a person, leave this Earth without knowing it, with out a reason and a purpose.
If you have suffered loss, you have to be able to find peace. I believe that Heather's purpose in Heaven is so much bigger and larger than anything on this Earth, even all of our suffering at losing her. This is not the end- we will all meet again one day, as long as our hearts are right with Jesus.
Another nice thought is that the Ancient Egyptians associated sparrows with the stars, and believed that the bird would catch the souls on those who died and fly them to the heavens where they would live as stars, watching over and shining down on us. I plan on naming a star after her in the Scorpio constellation (her zodiac). Then I'll add a little star to the tattoo. I also want to add 5 music notes, because there are five inside jokes/secrets that we had, and noone else knew them. She took those secrets to the grave, and I will too. I want music notes, because music has always been a huge part of my life as I play the piano, flute, piccolo, and guitar. Heather and I were in band together and shared a music stand! The music notes will help remind me of all the fun times we had together in band and also will have the bird "singing a song" which will remind me of "I'll fly away" that they sang at her funeral and also of us singing in church together when we were younger.
Finally, she secretly thought that she had a bird nose and someone told her once that she looked like a bird, and she was always insecure about that. I know she would think it was funny that I got a bird to remember her by, and that makes me laugh and remember hundreds of other laughs!
