chestpiece in progress
As usual, this one has a lot of meaning to me. I wanted something that would symbolize memories I have of my parents from childhood (because my parents are fantastic), and the one thing that always reminds me of my daddy when I was younger is sailing. We had a sailboat on the Texas coast (as exciting and brown as it is) and in summer we'd go on really neat trips where he'd sail us around from place to place; it was then that I learned to think of the middle of the ocean as the most relaxing place in the world. My dad taught me so much about life: never stagnate, never settle, always look for something which makes you ecstatically happy, and follow your bliss. Thus, the compass and sextant are navigational tools which steer me and help me remember those lessons. My mother is also awesome, and as a kid I remember her always planting zinnias (the rounder flowers on either side) in the garden. She had a terribly brown thumb, but she kept trying, and the zinnias always grew, for some reason, and they were beautiful. She taught me all about hard work, holding yourself to high standards, and most of all her own ethics (which I've shaped into my own over the years, but the foundation is hers).
This is a damn essay. The indian paintbrushes (which will be much more recognizable once color happens) are my contribution. My dad always says he never looked at flowers until I came along; my mother never took artists seriously. I guess I wanted to remind myself how we've all shaped each other for the better, although they've been divorced for years, and to also have something to help me navigate through life without settling or giving up or slacking off.

Enjoyed your essay, don't apologize, wish I had your childhood in some ways, but we all have our own paths and journeys to travel in order to progress. Wonderful way to honor yourself and your parents. Takes a lot of courage to put that much ink on your chest. Pardon my essay, cheers!!
